Sports Administration, Ministry of Education 2019 Annual Report
Sports Makes You a Happy Life Sports Lead to a Happy Life
The development of the national power relies fundamentally on the great physical strength of its citizens. To this end, ways to achieve it are training more athletes, promoting physical education (PE) in schools and encouraging more people to take exercise, through which a sense of community can also be fostered. Ever since our foundation in 2013, we’ve consulted sports experts worldwide and implemented a PE policy for the next decade. It aims at realizing these ambitions—healthy citizens, professional athletes, and a high-spirited Taiwan.
Today our effort has proved a great success—students’ physical fitness performances are improving, more and more people are taking exercise, the national sports industry is prospering, and more sports facilities are under construction. The existing sports policy was also improved due to our amendment of laws such as the National Sports Act and the Sports Industry Development Act.
Moreover, we increased the sports budget from 7.1 billion in 2013 to 13.2 billion in 2019 to promote diverse sports events. For example, “Love Taiwan Through Exercise” launched by 22 counties has created a new trend toward exercise among the elder and helped them keep in good health. In addition, more and more people are trained to take a leading role in international sports organizations, which fosters new interaction between the local and international sports field.
Furthermore, taking into account “the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities” and “the Article 5 of the National Sports Act”, we’ve ensured the disabilities can enjoy the same right to exercise. We authorize National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) to carry out a policy that facilitates a sports environment friendly to the special needs. By improving both the soft skills and sports facilities, we hope to build a friendly sports environment accessible to the public, motivating them to exercise regularly and therefore living healthy lives.
To put our PE policy into practice in school PE classes, we’ve also cooperated with NTNU to develop 14 exemplary modules, and then promoted them to 22 counties nationwide, engaging 142 teachers in seed training. So the PE classes are growing more creative and interesting, which will engage more students and inspire them to apply PE to their daily lives. We believe our kids’ lives are becoming more vibrant. We’ll seek to develop a diversity of teaching modules and popularize new forms of PE classes among Taiwan.
